Landsliding Cases

In 2008, counsel for homeowners in a landslide case against the City of Arcadia. The City agreed in settlement to fully repair the slope and reimburse the homeowners for their attorney fees, expert fees and costs.

In 2007, Mr. Blum obtained a trial verdict of $4.7 million for his clients in Palos Verdes Estates, California. While the defendants, the City of Palos Verdes Estates, the County of Los Angeles, Verizon and Southern California Edison, had argued that the landslide was not their fault, Mr. Blum was able to win an award that included all money demanded at trial, including a full cost of repair, stigma damages, loss of use, attorneys' fees and experts' fees.

Counsel for Manulife Ins. Co. in its case against the State of California, City of Los Angeles, and County of Los Angeles. Manulife was owner of a nine-acre shopping center that suffered about $12 million in subsidence damage because of a leaking storm drain.

Counsel for numerous homeowner families in two cases against the State of California involving flood damage at Pena Creek and Big Rock Creek in Malibu. The culverts under Pacific Coast Highway were too small to drain the land behind them, forcing water and sediment to wash out of the canyons, onto the highway, and into the plaintiffs' homes. In some cases, waves of mud crashed through the inland-facing walls of the homes and exited the opposite side of the home by smashing through plate glass doors, carrying the plaintiffs' sofas and coffee tables into the sea. The cases settled for over $11 million.

Counsel for family involving landslide of their Calabasas home, resulting in a total recovery settlement of about $4.5 million (including funds recovered from the City of Calabasas, the developer, the water company and various insurance companies).

Represented six homeowner families in a lawsuit against the County of Los Angeles and the City of Malibu in 1997. The families' homes were badly flooded by a nearby creek, which rampaged out of its bed after a landslide re-routed it. The defendants paid a total of $6.195 million to the homeowners.

Counsel for landslide case in Dana Point with a judgment in Homeowners’ favor.

Counsel for plaintiffs in a subsidence case against CalTrans resulting in a $3.2 million settlement.
